Blog Topic: Local Blog Outreach

Well, I have been dwelling on this subject since I started re-blogging again (been a blogger since 1998) and I thought that I would put it out there to see whats going with the social conscious people in the community.

I've started using this phrase since I have seen it online and linked it on the blog ad page that "Social Media is basically the word of mouth on steroids!" and excuse my reference to drugs, but then again its somehow relevant to this culture; and how effective it can be when "spreading the word". Be it good ( rare) or bad news (very common).

So my questions and personal survey if you wish is this;

1. Where do you get your information from as to whats happening in the local scene?

2. Is it up to date?

3. Do you feel that the coverage of events your getting on newspapers, online news, TV, magazines, and social networks is working?

4. Do you find the local blogger community effective in sending out the message of whats going on in the country? (with this I am referring to Muscat Muttering, Andy in Oman and Oman Collective and all due respect to other local bloggers)

I feel that somehow there is a lack of publicized information, and thus I have tried to centralise information within this blog, and enhance public exposure to whats going on. You can read more here about 'Why Aishelaqtta?' and 'Advertsing on Aishelaqtta'.

Somehow I feel that with the new digital age, there is only a certain niche of people who are effectively active online. Though i must say that the trend at the moment is every so slightly changing.

C'est la vie in Oman

Hot Topic: Miseducated Care

I was going through my old personal blog, when I came across something I had written then and remembered it was based on a true story at the time. How the same message within the story has not changed, and that if anything the situation may have gotten worse with time.

"Carrying her sleepy son in hand Muna headed into the bedroom so as to change him into his pyjamas anticipating as little fuss as possible since Majid was in deep slumber. As she placed him on the bed and gathered his cloths from a nearby cupboard she heard him gently snoring and her heart filled with love tenfold. A love unconditional that it can never be expressed.

Muna lifted Majid slightly so as to take off his grimy shirt, which she noticed was filled with mud from earlier where he was playing with her younger brother in the garden. As she lifted the shirt she heard Majid mumbling and whimpering, she smiled looking at her little man as he automatically lifted his arms with his eyelids shut tightly. “NO! don’t take me” he suddenly shouted. “No no no, I refuse to go” he repeated again and again with his eyes still tightly shut not wanting to completely wake from his slumber.

Muna was shocked as to why her son was shouting and had a expression of pure fear on his face. She asked him gentle “Majid, where don’t you want to go? What’s wrong?” though his sifted sleep Majid said “I don’t want to go to play school” and with that Muna lifted her tense son into her arms forcing him to respond to her interrogating question “Habeebi (sweetheart) Why not? Don’t you like playing with other kids?” Majid half awake now looked at his mother with heavy eyes “They beat me with shoes, and put me on the naughty chair” Muna fell silent for a moment; she gathered her tiny boy changed him into his cloths and tucked him into bed. “Go to sleep, you won’t be going to play school again” she said soothingly to her snoozing toddler though her mind was racing with all the hurt and pain she felt for him, and the trauma he seems to have endured." Wardatil'7leej

How many of such incidents can you came acroos on a personal or a even a second hand level?

As a working mother I have no choice but to send my child to school, since the alternative would be to sit at home with the nanny and get babysat by the TV. I would rather my child interact with other children, and given the attention s/he needs to thrive. I must say that I have been fortunate in that the nursery I send my daughter to is conveniently close to home and my work place, and thus with anything happening I can always be at my child's disposal at a drop of a hat, but how many parents can actually afford such luxury?

Are our children in safe hands?
The giving of education is love itself

Showcasing: Asma'a Collectionz

Asma M Al Kharusi had struggled to establish a company and name for herself in what she believes to be the her door way to "promote Omani heritage and culture in a modern way". She persevered in her dream, and has finally reached a status that is befitting to the items, and heritage she bestows to each of the pieces on display in her shop.

The idea for Asmaa Collectionz came to esxistance off  her family’s travel company. Asmaa would take guests to Muttrah to buy local suvaniours, and realised that there was a gap in items that were Omani and modern. Her shop represents Omani pieces that are embellished with mother of pearl and lacquer; these unique items can be considered as the Omani antiques of the future.

Asmaa Collectionz provides necklaces, earrings, bangles and khanjars adorn a variety of sleek products that ranges from coasters, tablemats and trays to lamps, boxes, tables and chairs. Each item is actually designed by Asma Kharusi and is craftsman made to the highest specifications to reflect the goal and aim she ventured to portray in her vision.

Asma Al Kharusi can be considered an insparation to the young enterpuners seeking to establish a name in the market. Identifiying what was lacking in the local market, and with a pircing vision and determination was able to fill that need and also benefit in perserving the Omani heritage.

Asma Collectionz can be found in the Opera Galleria (Royal Opera House) located on the 2nd Floor.

Hot Topic: The lack of public facilities

Oman is making its mark in the tourism industry; the basic need for visitors of this country has yet to be met. The responsible government bodies should make a move to create a solution to these basic necessities.

For those who have visited Oman, it is always a destination to be revisited, but with the shortage of basic facilities it will soon go down a slippery slope and crash within the tourism sector.

“Lack of restrooms or basic hygiene, in fact, is just the tip of the iceberg, which could sink Oman's ambitious vessel showcasing an authentic Arab heritage, architecture, cuisine and hospitality for the globetrotting community. We are talking about all the basic services including information centers, availability of local area maps, smaller accommodation facilities and local restaurants that meet food safety standards, which are essential for the country to evolve itself into a true global tourism destination. And they are very crucial when there's a tremendous effort to position Oman as an exotic and appealing holiday destination, feel many in the industry.”
           Source

Isn’t it bad enough that the available restrooms at various shopping outlet, restaurant and public attraction is very unhygienic? Embarrassing much?  There are a few other “facilities” that have been mentioned in the quote above but the most embarrassing of them all is the lack of restrooms or basic hygiene!  Show of hand as to those of you who have actually walked into a restroom without fining it filled to the brim with water, toilet paper and faulty taps.
I want to see more for the country I cherish and enhancements in the basic necessities of any person living or visiting the country should be a priority. To me it’s very simple, Oman has to present its best to all travelers while preserving its tradition, cultural values and natural beauty.

Local Happenings: New Art Gallery; Stal

Stal Gallery, opened this week with an exhibition by a group of leading Arab artists. It inaugural exhibition, ‘Reflections’ witnessed the work of nine prominent Arab artists from the Sultanate and neighbouring countries.

Located in Madinat Sultan Qaboos, the gallery is funded by the Al Serkal family from Dubai, who are big supporters of the arts, while here in Oman the idea was conceived by artist Hassan Meer, who was passionate in advocating the project.

The Al Serkal Group, UAE has long been a leader in supporting the arts, with projects like Alserkal Avenue which provides a framework for different creative communities to foster international dialogue and cultural exchange. Today, Alserkal Avenue is known as a go-to place for art exhibition openings, workshops, seminars, young collectors auctions and community events in the region.

To the art community in Oman, the addition of a new gallery is an important event as there is a growing number of artists who need space to showcase thier work. This will help them establish themselves in the market, and promote thier work in an additional allocated designation.

News Flash: Oman budget crunch

I had originally decided to avoid anything to do with politics, and any relation that would place my beloved country in a controversial situation among the people of Oman. Yet I couldn't resist this topic, since it is based on future predictions of the countries financial situation, and that we may have to revert to international borrowing though we have stopped doing so as a nation since 1997.

An article link here caught my attention titled "Mideast money- Looming budget crunch pushed Oman toward debt market" I think that its enough of a shocker to wake the sleepers of this society.

The highlights from the article are:
* Public wage bill jump puts new pressure on state finances
* Pressure heavier on Oman than other wealthy Gulf states
* May start posting budget deficits in 2015, conceivably before
* Low outstanding debt level, Gulf aid mean crisis not imminent
* Oman will have to start making tough policy choices

Few snippets of the article from Reuters.

"When Oman's finance minister declared this month that the public sector wage bill might jump $2.3 billion next year - money which the government had not yet found - it was a fresh sign of a budget crunch looming in the Gulf state." source

"Oman, with a population of about 3.9 million, over a third of them foreign citizens, faces a tougher financial outlook in coming years. It may force the country to resume borrowing in international markets next year for the first time since 1997" source

"The International Monetary Fund predicted in October that Oman would slip into a fiscal deficit of 0.2 percent of gross domestic product in 2015, widening gradually to as much as 7.1 percent or about $6.8 billion in 2018 - but that was before the additional public wage expenditure was revealed." source

Apparently we wont be the only Gulf country suffering, but while other neighbouring nations have the reserves to sustain such deficits we on the other hand may struggle.

Somehow I am fearful of whats to come, yet resilient like my nation and its leader that the best judgements have been made. Am I being naive? Can we sustain this budget crunch?
