Omani officals sentenced to jail

The country is ablaze with the news of the conviction of three persons in the much-followed "oil bribery case".

The head of the tender committee at Petroleum Development Oman (PDO) and two senior expatriate officials of Galfar Engineering have been committed with jail sentences and fines for extending contracts between the two organisations.

The judge ordered that the Omani official was to be dismissed from his job, besides a three-year term in jail and payment of a fine of OMR600,000. The Omani official will also have to pay OMR300,000 in the court in order to seek a bail and to appeal in the higher court. While the Managing Director of the Galfar Engineering and Contracting, a local firm will have to serve a three-year jail term and pay a fine of OMR600,000. One of the officials is required to make a deposit of OMR300,000 in the court to seek a bail and to appeal in the higher court. The other expatriate official, a manager at the Galfar Engineering and Contracting, will be serving a two-year jail term and pay fine of OMR200,000. He also has to pay OMR100,000 in the court to seek a bail and appeal in the higher court. They will be both be deported after serving their jail terms.

There is a crack down in the country for such cases, and it seems that allot of under the table undertakings are raising to the surface. Seems that the government is getting a wake up call of such activities after a rumoured "red flag" was raised from foreign banks in various counties.
